Colicinogeny and R factor in Shigella

Abstract

|
Among a total of 127 strains of shigella nineteen strains produced colicins. Of the colicins produced by shigella tested, 3 colicins were identified as colicin K and others were unclassified. It was noteworthy that 6 of 19 strains of colicinogenic shigella did not inhibit Escherichia coli K-12, but inhibited one or more of standard indicator strains. Shigella strains carrying R factors were greater than strains without R factor in numbers. Colicinogenic strains were relatively more resistant to colicins produced by standard colicin producers than non-colicinogenic strains. Strains carrying R factors were less sensitive to the colicins than strains without R factor.
